When I began creating the body care products for Starlight Bath & Body, I knew I didn’t want to make just another body butter.
Many formulas rely on one or two common ingredients. While those can be lovely, I wanted to create something more intentional—something built from ingredients long appreciated in skincare for the way they help soften, protect, and support healthy-looking skin.
That vision led to the creation of our Five-Butter Body Butter.
Instead of relying on a single base, this formula combines five plant butters and two botanical oils, each chosen for the unique way it contributes to the feel and performance of the product.
Together they create a body butter that feels rich, balanced, and deeply comforting.
Why Five Butters Instead of One?
Many body butters are made with a single primary butter, most often shea. While shea butter is wonderful for the skin, I wanted to create something more balanced and refined.
Each plant butter has its own unique composition of fatty acids, nutrients, and texture. By combining several complementary butters, it becomes possible to create a formula that offers the richness of a traditional body butter while still feeling smooth, elegant, and comfortable on the skin.
Some butters contribute deep moisture, while others help improve texture or support the skin’s natural barrier. When thoughtfully blended together, they create a product that feels more complete than relying on one ingredient alone.
The result is a body butter designed to feel deeply nourishing without being heavy, luxurious without feeling greasy, and comforting enough to become part of your daily ritual.
Shea Butter — The Classic Skin Nourisher
Shea butter has been used in traditional skincare for generations. It is naturally rich in fatty acids and vitamin E, which help support the skin’s moisture barrier.
Because of its creamy texture and protective qualities, shea butter forms the foundation of the formula, helping the skin feel soft and deeply conditioned.
Mango Butter — Smooth and Lightweight
Pressed from the kernels of the mango fruit, mango butter is known for its smooth, velvety texture.
In skincare formulations it is valued for helping soften the skin while maintaining a lighter feel compared to heavier plant butters. This helps balance richness with a more elegant finish.
Kokum Butter — Barrier Support
Kokum butter is prized in skincare for its naturally high concentration of stearic and oleic fatty acids.
These components are often associated with helping support the skin’s natural barrier and allowing it to retain moisture more effectively. Kokum butter also contributes structure while still melting beautifully into the skin.
Murumuru Butter — Deep Moisture
Murumuru butter comes from the seeds of the Amazonian murumuru palm and is widely appreciated for its ability to help lock moisture into the skin.
Its unique fatty acid profile allows it to create a soft, smooth finish while helping skin feel supple and hydrated.
Cupuaçu Butter — Exceptional Hydration
Cupuaçu butter is often recognized in cosmetic science for its impressive ability to hold water.
Because of this characteristic, it is frequently used in skincare products designed to support moisture retention and skin softness. It brings a deeply conditioning quality to the formula while maintaining a beautiful creamy texture.
Rosehip Oil — Nutrient-Rich Botanical Oil
Rosehip oil is well known in skincare for its naturally occurring essential fatty acids and vitamin A derivatives.
These nutrients are often associated with supporting skin elasticity and promoting a more radiant appearance. In this formula, rosehip oil adds lightweight nourishment that complements the richness of the butters.
Camellia Oil — Silky Hydration
Camellia oil has been used for centuries in traditional Japanese beauty rituals and is prized for its incredibly smooth texture.
Naturally rich in oleic acid, it helps soften and smooth the skin while absorbing beautifully. Its presence in the formula contributes to the luxurious, velvety finish of the body butter.
